I have listened to hundreds of romance audiobooks in the last couple of years, hundreds of different voices, steamy scenes, and couples. Just listening to another person telling a story offers me a sense of relaxation, even though I might perform a tiresome task. I feel distracted, excited, or entertained depending on the quality of the narrator’s performance, the story, where I am, and what I am doing besides listening. I feel distracted, excited, or entertained depending on the quality of the narrator’s performance, the story, where I am, and what I am doing besides listening. There have never been as many audiobooks available as there are now, which is why I will tell you why you should start listening to romance audiobooks, too.
Listening to novels everywhere
About twenty years ago, there were only classics and children’s stories available. Nowadays, companies such as Audible and audiobooks.com release thousands of new audiobooks in all imaginable genres every year. Among the largest publishing houses is Penguin Random House. According to an article about the Global Audiobook Trends and Statistics for 2018 by Goodreader, the publisher noted a 20% increase in audiobook production in 2017 compared to 2016. There are over 11K titles in their catalogue, today. In 2017, Audible released the new subscription programme, audible romance. You can choose from thousands of romance audiobooks, rank a novel’s level of steaminess, skip ahead to the hottest scenes, and find your favourite characters and tropes. The trend goes towards audio making it easier and easier to find a book you want to listen to rather than reading it yourself.
Secret pleasure of listening to audiobooks
Another advantage of listening to audiobooks is that it fits the romance genre perfectly. Both are secret pleasures. You don’t tell anyone about them. Nobody needs to know what you are listening to. Except of course, your device decides to play the juicy part of a romance audiobook in the middle of a train, promptly identifying you as the lonely, unsatisfied housewife you are not. Apart from that, there’s no compromising book cover to be hidden. It is only you and the voice in your head.
The voice in your head
Listening to romance audiobooks is more like going to a play than reading a book. A good narrator has a different recognisable voice for every character and manages to broadcast feelings like passion, humour, or desperation, which makes the experience all the more personal. They should also know how to do accents. I admit, I am a sucker for a good highland brogue. Some of my favourite voices are Devena Porter (Outlander), Phil Gigante (Kiss of the highlander), and Rosalyn Landor (The bride). More than anything else, the heroine’s and hero’s voice bring the story to life. If you can do all that in your head, good for you. But if you cannot, try the audiobook.
Multitasking while listening to romance audiobooks
Audiobooks offer the great potential of doing something else while still experiencing a good story. Reading a book pretty much claims your full attention and restricts your range of movement. You can sit or lie down, but both your eyes and hands are occupied with holding the book or e-book device and looking at the words in front of you. Ever tried moving and reading at the same time? It’s not pretty. Audiobooks, on the other hand, facilitate a number of activities while still being immersed in the couple’s progress. Here are some that I enjoy or simply find practical:
- Eating (sweets are generally recommended)
- Taking a bath
- Shaving your legs
- Working out
The convenience of listening to romance audiobooks
Audiobooks are convenient. You can listen to them anywhere you like, anytime you want. Not only are you freer to do something else when listening to an audiobook, you can also take them anywhere. Believe me, there is no place too profane to listen to a story. Audiobooks are available as CD’s as well as mp3-downloads. You can use an app and listen to an audiobook whenever and wherever you like. You can pause them and they remember where you stopped. Here are some places where I usually listen to audiobooks:
- In bed
- In the kitchen
- On the toilet
- On the train
- At work (don’t tell anyone)
- On a walk
Finish listening to romance audiobooks
Lastly, although it’s really not quantity but quality that matters, you can manage to “read” a lot more audiobooks than e-books. By listening to a novel whenever I have a tiresome chore to complete or while relaxing or on my way home, I can manage to listen to 1 to 2 audiobooks a week. In this way, I finish between 50 and 100 audiobooks per year. How many paperbacks or e-books do you manage to read? The number is not even close, right?
